Providence Tops Rhode Island Saturday

MBB Minute – Providence was the only BIG EAST team to taste victory on a four-game Saturday.

The Friars (7-1) knocked off in-state rival Rhode Island 84-69 in the 133rd meeting between the two teams. Bryce Hopkins scored 19 of his 24 points in the second half. PC led 35-32 at halftime and did not trail after the break. Devin Carter added 17 points and 11 rebounds. PC is 92-5 at home against non-league foes, including 25 straight since 2019.

Georgetown came about as close to a victory as possible against TCU without actually getting the win. The Hoyas (5-3) overcame a 15-point deficit in the second half to take a two-point lead with 2.7 seconds remaining, but a long, banked 3-pointer at the buzzer gave the Horned Frogs an 84-83 victory. Jayden Epps led GU with 24 points. Dontrez Styles added 18 points.

No. 3 Marquette’s second-half rally at Wisconsin fell short in a 75-64 defeat. After trailing 46-33 at halftime, the Golden Eagles (6-2) cut the deficit to one, but were unable to grab the lead. Kam Jones scored a team-high 19 points. Tyler Kolek added 11 points and six assists.

No. 18 Villanova also played a local rival and lost to Drexel 57-55 in the Wildcats’ last game in the Big 5 Classic. Eric Dixon scored a game-high 21 points. Villanova (6-3) was hurt by poor shooting. The Wildcats shot 32.8 percent from the floor, including 5-of-27 from 3-point range.

The only game on Sunday’s schedule is an in-state battle of No. 15 Creighton playing at Nebraska on FS1 at 4 p.m. ET. The Bluejays (6-1) have won nine of the last 11 meetings against the Cornhuskers, but lost 63-53 last year in Omaha. Crieghton is coming off a 79-65 win at Oklahoma State in a BIG EAST-Big 12 Battle. Nebraska is 7-0.
