MBB Minute – In a battle where the winner would grab sole possession of first place, No. 11 Marquette edged No. 16 Xavier 69-68 Wednesday at Fiserv Forum. Both teams scored in the final eight seconds. A putback by the Golden Eagles’ Olivier-Maxence Prosper with 1.6 seconds left gave Marquette the win.
Xavier (19-7, 11-4 BIG EAST) outshot Marquette (21-6, 13-3 BE) from the field, 52.9 percent to 38.2 percent, but committed 17 turnovers, which the Golden Eagles turned into 21 points. Souley Boum led the Musketeers in scoring with 24 points. Marquette’s Stevie Mitchell had 17 points and a career-high six steals.
BIG EAST play resumes on Saturday with four games.
At noon ET on FOX, Seton Hall plays No. 20 Connecticut at Gampel Pavilion. The Pirates (16-11, 9-7 BE) are in fifth place in the standings, a half-game ahead of the Huskies (19-7, 8-7 BE). The Hall rallied to win the first meeting 67-66 on Jan. 18.
Xavier is back at Cintas Center to host DePaul at 4 p.m. on CBSSN. In the first meeting, which was also on Jan. 18, the Blue Demons (13-14, 5-11 BE) surprised the Musketeers 73-72, but have not won since that game. DePaul lost to St. John’s 93-83 in double overtime on Tuesday.
FOX will telecast Villanova at No. 24 Providence at 4:30 p.m. The Wildcats (13-13, 7-8 BE), buoyed by the return of Justin Moore, have won three straight. The Friars (19-7, 11-4 BE) are coming off Tuesday’s 94-86 double-overtime win against No. 18 Creighton. PC won 70-65 on Jan. 29.
St. John’s (16-11, 6-10 BE), the other double-overtime winner on Tuesday, hosts Creighton (17-9, 11-4) at Carnesecca Arena at 7:30 p.m. on FS1. The Red Storm have won their last two games, while the Bluejays had their eight-game winning streak end at Providence on Tuesday. Creighton beat St. John’s 104-76 on Jan. 25.
