MBB Minute – The undefeated streak of the four teams at the top of the league standings ended Tuesday when No. 10 Marquette won at No. 19 Creighton 73-71 and Villanova took a 64-63 decision at No. 16 Xavier. Going into Tuesday, Marquette, Xavier, Creighton and Providence were a combined 32-0 at home in league games.
Marquette led Creighton 63-53 with eight minutes left before the Bluejays rallied to tie the game. MU’s Tyler Kolek scored the decisive basket on a floater in the lane with 29 seconds remaining. The first-place Golden Eagles (22-6, 14-3 BIG EAST) got most of their scoring from Kam Jones (19 points), Kolek (18) and Oso Ighodaro (18). The Bluejays (18-10, 12-5 BE) were led by Baylor Scheierman’s 18 points and 13 rebounds. Ryan Nembhard added 16 points.
Villanova came back from a 13-point deficit to beat Xavier at Cintas Center. Justin Moore enjoyed his best game since returning to the VU lineup. He connected on 10-of-13 from the field and 4-of-7 from 3-point range en route to a game-high 25 points. The Wildcats (14-14, 8-9 BE) committed only seven turnovers to Xavier’s 14. Souley Boum led the Musketeers (20-8, 12-5 BE) with 17 points.
No. 20 Providence at No. 18 Connecticut headlines a three-game Wednesday. The Friars (20-7, 12-4 BE) sit in second place in the standings, a half-game ahead of Xavier and Creighton. The Huskies (20-7, 9-7 BE) are in fifth. PC won the first meeting 73-61 on Jan. 4. FS1 will televise at 6:30 p.m. ET.
The second game of the FS1 twinbill is Butler at DePaul at 8:30 p.m. The Bulldogs (13-15, 5-12 BE) have dropped their last two games. Jayden Taylor has scored at least 19 points in his last five games. Umoja Gibson ranks fourth in the league in scoring with a 16.2 mark for the Blue Demons (9-18, 3-13 BE).
St. John’s travels to Georgetown for a 9 p.m. tip on CBS Sports Network. The Red Storm (16-12, 6-11 BE) took the first meeting against the Hoyas (7-21, 2-15 BE) 75-73 on Jan. 29. The Hoyas are coming off a 68-62 win at Butler.
