MBB Minute: Marquette Clinches Tie For Crown; UConn, Villanova Keep Rolling

MBB Minute – Marquette clinched a tie for the BIG EAST regular-season crown when it defeated DePaul 90-84 at a sold-out Fiserv Forum Saturday night. The 10th-ranked Golden Eagles can claim the outright title with a win in either of their last two games in the regular season.
 
Tyler Kolek and Kam Jones led the Golden Eagles (22-6, 15-3 BE) with 22 points each. Kolek dished 14 assists and Jones made seven 3-pointers. Marquette built a 49-28 halftime lead before the Blue Demons (9-20, 3-15 BE) used an 18-4 spurt to help close the deficit to six points. Nick Ongenda led DePaul’s efforts with 16 points, 12 rebounds and five blocked shots. Umoja Gibson finished with 20 points and eight assists.
 
Villanova’s recent strong play continued with a 79-67 victory over No. 19 Creighton at Wells Fargo Center. Eric Dixon poured in a career-high 31 points, making 6-of-8 from 3-point range. The Wildcats used a 27-8 first-half run to earn a 37-20 edge at the break. Cam Whitmore added 17 points. The Bluejays (18-11, 12-6 BE) got 18 points from Arthur Kaluma and 17 from Ryan Kalkbrenner.
 
No. 18 Connecticut also used a strong first half en route to victory. The Huskies (22-7, 11-7 BE) led 50-41 at the break and knocked off St. John’s 95-86 at Madison Square Garden. Jordan Hawkins scored 20 points for UConn and Adama Sanogo added 18 points and nine rebounds. The Huskies’ bench contributed 32 points. AJ Storr scored 20 points and Posh Alexander added 18 for the Johnnies (17-13, 7-12 BE).
 
Sunday’s only contest is No. 20 Providence at Georgetown on FOX at 12:30 p.m. ET. The two teams will be meeting for the 81st time. The Friars (20-8, 12-5 BE) beat the Hoyas (7-22, 2-16 BE) 74-62 Feb. 8.
