MBB Minute – The two home teams in action came away with wins on Tuesday. There was little drama in one game and plenty in the other.
No. 21 Connecticut took control early against No. 10 Marquette and took an 87-72 decision in Hartford. The Huskies (19-6, 8-6 BIG EAST) got out of the gate quickly and sped to a 46-29 lead by halftime. Tristen Newton produced his second triple-double of the season with 12 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds. Jordan Hawkins scored a game-high 20 points. UConn won the rebounding battle 48-24. Tyler Kolek led Marquette (19-6, 11-3 BE) with 17 points.
At Hinkle Fieldhouse, St. John’s Joel Soriano’s late basket was ruled after the buzzer and Butler won 68-66. The Bulldogs (12-13, 4-10 BE) recovered from a 41-34 halftime deficit and scored the final seven points of the game. Jayden Taylor scored a game-high 19 points for the second straight contest. Posh Alexander excelled for the Red Storm (14-11, 4-10 BE) with 17 points, nine rebounds and six assists.
A three-game Wednesday starts with No. 23 Creighton at Seton Hall at 6:30 p.m. ET. The streaking Bluejays (15-8, 9-3 BE) are riding a six-game winning streak in league play for the first time as a member of the BIG EAST. The Pirates (15-9, 8-5 BE) are also on the uptick, winning seven of their last eight.
Georgetown visits No. 20 Providence at 8 p.m. on CBS Sports Network in the 80
th meeting between the two teams. The Hoyas’ scoring leaders are a trio of guards: Primo Spears (16.1), Brandon Murray (14.8) and Jay Heath (12.9). The Friars (17-6, 9-3 BE) are 12-0 at home this season and have won 33 of their last 34 in the AMP.
Villanova hosts DePaul at 8:30 p.m. on FS1. The Blue Demons (9-15, 3-10 BE) ended a 22-game losing streak against the Wildcats (10-13, 4-8 BE) with a 75-65 victory at Wintrust Arena on Jan. 10. DePaul will be aiming for its road win versus Villanova since 2007. The Wildcats have lost their last three, close losses to Providence, Marquette and Creighton.
