NEW YORK – On the day before the BIG EAST Women’s Lacrosse Championship, the Conference announced the annual regular season honors on Thursday. Denver, Connecticut and Marquette each earned two major awards.
For the regular season champion and tournament top seed Denver, senior Sam Thacker was unanimously voted BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year and senior Julia Gilbert was named BIG EAST Co-Attacker of the Year. UConn senior Kate Shaffer was tabbed BIG EAST Co-Attacker of the Year while graduate student Landyn White won her second consecutive BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year award. As for the Golden Eagles, senior Lydia Foust was voted BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year and Marquette, led by head coach Meredith Black, was honored as the BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year.
In addition to Shaffer and Gilbert, Villanova sophomore Sydney Pappas was also named BIG EAST Co-Attacker of the Year. Newcomer Xavier earned its first BIG EAST yearly award in program history as attacker Lola Mancuso was awarded BIG EAST Freshman of the Year. All-BIG EAST awards are selected via a vote of the league’s head coaches who are not allowed to vote for their own players.
Thacker repeats as BIG EAST Defensive Player and extends Denver’s streak of winning the award to four years. Pioneer defenders Molly Little (2021) and Katherine Fischer (2019) were the last two Denver players to win the award. Thacker leads the league in caused turnovers (2.41 per game, 41 total) and ranks fifth nationally in the category. The senior is tied for fourth in the league in ground balls averaging 2.35 per game. The Denver defense anchored by Thacker has held all 17 of its opponents to single-digit goals this season, including all BIG EAST teams.
Due to a tie in voting, Gilbert, Shaffer and Pappas were all named BIG EAST Co-Attackers of the Year. Gilbert finished the regular season with 44 goals, 52 points and 97 shots. White also ranks second in the conference in save percentage (.506) among all starting goalkeepers.
