Georgetown’s Will Bowen Named BIG EAST Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year

NEW YORK (Aug. 15, 2023) - Georgetown men’s lacrosse defender Will Bowen was named the BIG EAST Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the league announced on Tuesday. Bowen will receive a $4,000 scholarship, which may be applied to graduate or professional studies. The selection was made by the Conference’s Academic Affairs Committee.

Graduating with a Master of Science in finance from the prestigious McDonough School of Business, Bowen boasted a 3.852 graduate GPA and was a 2023 College Sports Communicators First Team Academic All-American.

Bowen is the third men’s scholar-athlete from Georgetown, and the second in as many seasons, as soccer standout Dante Polvara collected the honor last season. Bowen is the first men’s or women’s lacrosse member to earn the prestigious honor. Alongside fellow Hoya Julia Leas, announced as the 2023 BIG EAST Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year on Thursday, the duo becomes the fifth and sixth Georgetown student-athletes to claim the award and it marks just the seventh time in league history that one school has swept the award.

The 2023 BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year and an All-BIG EAST First Team selection, Bowen concluded his collegiate career with 98 career caused turnovers, 22nd most in NCAA Division I history. This past season he led the Hoyas to their fifth-straight BIG EAST Championship and a trip to the NCAA Quarterfinals.

Overall, Bowen was named a 2023 United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Second Team All-American, 2023 Inside Lacrosse Second Team Media All-American and a 2023 USA Lacrosse Magazine Third Team All-American. Following the season’s end, he was selected seventh overall in the Premier Lacrosse League College Draft.

The Conference also announced the male winners of the 2022-23 BIG EAST Institutional Scholar-Athlete Scholarships. Each institutional winner receives $2,000 toward graduate studies.
