Weekend Round-Up
Four BIG EAST women’s basketball teams saw their multi-game winning streaks stretched with wins over the weekend, including conference leader and 13
th-ranked Connecticut making it 10 in a row. The Huskies won at St. John’s on Saturday 92-49 to improve to 6-0 in BIG EAST play. Villanova claimed its fifth consecutive victory, winning at Butler on Saturday night 65-54 to take over the solo spot in second place in the BIG EAST standings at 4-1. No. 23 Marquette and No. 22 Creighton both stretched their winning streaks to three, with the Golden Eagles knocking off rival DePaul 78-47 on Saturday night and the Bluejays holding on against Providence on Sunday, 81-70. Seton Hall got back into the win column on Saturday evening with a 61-47 win at Xavier. Marquette, Creighton and St. John’s are currently in a three-way tie for third place in the standings with a 4-2 mark in league play, followed by Seton Hall in sixth at 3-3.
22/21 Creighton 81, Providence 70
After getting just two points from Emma Ronsiek and Lauren Jensen in the opening quarter, the duo scored 42 points in the final three as Creighton defeated Providence 81-70 on Sunday in Omaha. The win pushed the Bluejays to 13-3 on the season and 4-2 in BIG EAST action, while Providence fell to 8-10 overall and 2-3 in conference play. Down 56-37 midway through the third, PC went on a 12-2 run to close within nine, 58-49, with under a minute left in the frame. A 6-0 Creighton swing got the lead back to double figures where it would stay the remainder of the game. Olivia Olsen led the Friars with 18 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

Villanova 65, Butler 54
A game of runs saw Villanova jump out to a 10-0 lead before Butler narrowed a 12-point deficit down to one in the second quarter. But it was a 22-13 third-quarter advantage by the Wildcats (11-5, 4-1) that put the game in their favor as VU won for the fifth straight game. Freshman Maddie Webber had a game-high 18 points to lead Villanova, while Caroline Strande paced Butler (8-8, 0-5) with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Villanova committed just seven turnovers while the Bulldogs outshot the Wildcats from the field, .429 to .397.

Seton Hall 61, Xavier 47
The Hall led by only one point at the break but held Xavier without a field goal for more than a full quarter and scoreless for 8:08 between the third and fourth quarters to pull away. The Pirates held the Musketeers to 28 percent shooting from the floor in the second half. Azana Baines led The Hall (11-6, 3-3) with 14 points, eight rebounds, three steals and three assists. Aizhanique Mayo paced Xavier (1-13, 0-5) with 14 points, including a 4-of-7 mark from three.

13/14 UConn 92, St. John's 49
Paige Bueckers scored 22 points and Ice Brady added a career-high 17 to help No. 13 UConn win at St. John's 92-49 on Saturday. Aaliyah Edwards added 16 points for the Huskies (14-3, 6-0), who had five players in double figures and shot 64.4% from the field. UConn has won its six BIG EAST games by an average of 36.0 points. Jailah Donald scored 11 points to lead St. John's (10-8, 4-2), which had won six of seven coming into the game.

23/23 Marquette 78, DePaul 47
Marquette (15-2, 4-2 BIG EAST) shot 57.1 percent from the floor, the 11th time this season MU has been 50-percent-or-better. MU won the rebounding battle, 39-28, and has outrebounded its opponent in every game but one this season. Liza Karlen led MU in scoring for the eighth time this season, finishing with 19 points and six rebounds on an 8-of-9 shooting clip. DePaul (9-9, 1-4 BIG EAST) was led by Shakara McCline who had 13 points.
