St. John’s Nails Down Victory At MSG

Friars, Golden Eagles Win On Road

MBB Minute – Providence, St. John’s and Marquette were the winners on a three-game Wednesday. The Friars had to rally in the second half to earn their victory while the Red Storm and Golden Eagles were in control most of the way.
 
At Prudential Center, Providence came back from a 51-41 deficit to defeat Seton Hall 67-63. Ticket Gaines led four Friars (13-6, 4-4 BIG EAST) in double figures with 17 points. He shot 5-of-7 from 3-point range. Josh Oduro helped with 16 points and eight boards. Kadary Richmond did not play for the Pirates (13-7, 6-3) due to injury. Al-Amir Dawes poured in a career-high 26 points.
 
St. John’s used a 28-13 run midway in the first half to grab control and defeat Villanova 70-50 at Madison Square Garden. The Red Storm (13-7, 5-4) were buoyed by Joel Soriano’s game highs of 21 points and nine rebounds. The Wildcats (11-8, 4-4) got 16 points and eight boards from Eric Dixon. Coupled with a win at Nova on Jan. 6, St. John’s sweeps Villanova in the regular season for the first time since 1992-93.
 
Marquette got its offense going with a season-high 15 3-pointers in an 86-73 win at DePaul. David Joplin led the Golden Eagles (14-5, 5-3) with 21 points, which included 6-of-8 from beyond the arc. Tyler Kolek excelled with 22 points and seven assists. Oso Ighodaro added 19 points, a game-high 12 rebounds and two blocked shots. Jalen Terry led the Blue Demons (3-16, 0-8) with a season-high 22 points. The game was the debut of DePaul interim head coach Matt Brady.
 
The BIG EAST schedule is dark until Saturday with one game on FOX and three on FS1. At 12:30 p.m. ET, on FOX, Georgetown plays at Providence. The FS1 telecasts are: Seton Hall at Marquette at 1 p.m., Villanova at Butler at 3 p.m. and DePaul at Creighton at 7 p.m.
