MBB Minute – DePaul and Marquette are both 3-0 after Monday victories. Butler also won, knocking off Western Michigan.
DePaul has already equaled last year’s win total after its 95-64 drubbing of Mercer at Wintrust Arena. Forward NJ Benson led five Blue Demon players in double figures with 15 points. DePaul opened the game with a 15-4 spurt and led 51-22 at the break. The 31-point victory also marks the first time the Blue Demons have recorded back-to-back 30-point wins since the 1999-2000 season.
Marquette, which moved up to No. 15 in the AP and USA Today polls, defeated Central Michigan 70-62 at Fiserv Forum. Defensive specialist Stevie Mitchell helped on the offensive end with a team-high 17 points. He also made three steals. The Golden Eagles turned 26 CMU turnovers into 33 points. MU coach Shaka Smart registered his 350
th career win. He is 78-30 at Marquette.
Butler got back into the winning column by handling Western Michigan 85-65 at Hinkle Fieldhouse. The Bulldogs (2-1) outshot the Broncos from the field, 56 percent to 31 percent. Pierre Brooks led five Butler players in double figures with 20 points. Augusto Cassia took advantage of his first collegiate start and scored 16 points. Patrick McCaffery added 15 points. When WMU closed to 57-54, Butler responded with a 10-2 run to regain control.
