PROVIDENCE - The BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship presented by JEEP opened Friday afternoon with No. 1 seed UConn taking down No. 4 seed Liberty 2-1. No. 2 seed Temple beat No. 3 seed Old Dominion 2-1 in a thrilling double overtime game. The Huskies and Owls advance to Sunday's title match at 1 p.m. ET on the BIG EAST Digital Network on FloSports presented by Invesco QQQ. The winner of the BIG EAST Championship receives the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
No. 10 UConn 2, No. 18 Liberty 1
Liberty came out hot in the first quarter, with freshman defender Dara Semmartin scoring off a penalty corner at the 12:58 mark. Liberty took the lead into the half. UConn responded in the third quarter with their first goal from senior Sophia Ugo. Less than six minutes later, freshman Sophie Perschk added another goal for the Huskies. Both goalies, UConn's Natalie McKenna (BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year) and Liberty's Michaela Skinner, had three saves each.
Temple 2, No. 20 Old Dominion 1
Less than five minutes into the game, Old Dominion's Sian Emslie opened the scoring with an unassisted shot. It took Temple until the 50
th minute of regulation to tie the game, with a penalty corner shot by junior Lina Neilson, her first goal of the season. The game was tied at the end of regulation, forcing overtime. Both teams went scoreless in the first 10-minute overtime. Three minutes into the second overtime, Agustina Tucceri scored off a penalty corner sealing the 2-1 victory for the Owls. Both goalies, Temple's Isabella Ospitale and Old Dominion's Suus Broers, had three saves each.
