Bluejays, Huskies Defeat Ranked Opponents

MBB Minute – In Big 12-BIG EAST Battle action on Wednesday, Creighton took down No. 1 Kansas while No. 25 Connecticut knocked off No. 15 Baylor. No. 5 Marquette and DePaul both had their unbeaten streaks end with losses at No. 6 Iowa State and Texas Tech, respectively. Outside of the Battle, Seton Hall got back in the win column with a victory over NJIT.
 
Creighton (6-3) got 27 points from Pop Isaacs and 17 points each from Steven Ashworth and Ryan Kalkbrenner in its 76-63 win over the top-ranked Jayhawks. With a 58-53 lead Creighton used a decisive 18-6 run in the second half to secure the win. Coupled with an 85-66 win last February over then-No. 1 UConn, the Bluejays became the first team ever to beat the AP-ranked No. 1 team twice in the same calendar year by double figures.
 
UConn (6-3), playing without injured Alex Karaban, rallied from a double-digit deficit in the first half to beat Baylor 76-72, Liam McNeeley led the Huskies with 17 points, eight rebounds and three blocks. UConn took the lead early in the second half and did not trail the rest of the way.
 
Marquette (8-1) lost 81-70 at No. 6 Iowa State. The Cyclones used a 14-0 spurt midway in the second half to pull away. Kam Jones powered MU with 14 points, nine assists and eight rebounds. Royce Parham added 17 points after Chase Ross left with an injury.
 
DePaul (7-1) went scoreless in the first five minutes at Texas Tech, but came back to trail only 38-37 at halftime. The Red Raiders won the second half and gained a 76-62 victory. The Blue Demons got 39 points from their bench led by Jacob Meyer’s 14 points.
 
Seton Hall (5-4) defeated NJIT 67-56 behind a career-high scoring night from Prince Aligbe, who netted 19 points on 9-of-12 shooting from the field.
 
BIG EAST teams are 70-24 (.745) going into Thursday when the only game on the schedule is a Battle contest with Xavier at TCU at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN+.
