UConn, Marquette Continue Win Streaks; Creighton, Butler Also Victorious

MBB Minute – Saturday’s four-game slate was filled with outstanding individual performances along with some drama. At the end of the day, Connecticut, Marquette, Creighton and Butler were the winners with the Huskies and Golden Eagles maintaining their winning streaks.
 
No. 1 UConn was in control throughout in its 89-64 victory at Georgetown. The Huskies (22-2, 12-1 BIG EAST) shot a season-high 61.1 percent from the floor and built a 26-point lead in the first half. Alex Karaban led all scorers with 25 points. Stephon Castle added 17. Dontrez Styles helped the Hoyas (8-15, 1-11) with 23 points and six rebounds. UConn has a 12-game BIG EAST winning streak, the longest in the league since Villanova won 12 straight in 2014-15.
 
No. 7 Marquette trailed visiting St. John’s 47-38 at halftime before a Tyler Kolek-led rally gave the Golden Eagles (18-5, 9-3) their seventh straight win, an 86-75 win. Kolek, who finished with 27 points and 13 assists, scored 22 points in the second half. Stevie Mitchell added 14 points. St. John’s (14-10, 6-7) was paced by Daniss Jenkins, who posted 22 points, six rebounds and six assists.
 
No. 19 Creighton got behind early at Xavier before taking an 88-81 victory at Cintas Center. The Bluejays (17-7, 8-5) were trailing 13-4 before center Ryan Kalkbrenner got rolling. He made 12-of-14 from the field and finished with 28 points, seven rebounds and four blocked shots. Baylor Scheierman contributed 16 points, 12 boards and eight assists. Xavier got most of its scoring from guards Desmond Claude (22 points), Dayvion McKnight (21) and Quincy Olivari (18).
 
In a back-and-forth contest, Butler edged Providence 75-72 at Hinkle Field House. The Bulldogs (16-8, 7-6), who have won five of their last six games, led most of the first half before falling behind 71-64 with 4:01 left. DJ Davis notched his fourth straight 20-point game with 20 points and a career-high eight rebounds. The Friars (15-9, 6-7) were led by Corey Floyd Jr., who finished with 20 points. Devin Carter added 18. Josh Oduro missed the game for family reasons.
 
Seton Hall and Villanova meet in a pre-Super Bowl matchup Sunday at noon ET at Wells Fargo Center on CBSSN. The Pirates (15-8, 8-4) and Wildcats (12-11, 5-7) have not met this season. Last year, Villanova defeated Seton Hall twice in a pair of four-point decisions.
