Providence, St. John’s Grab Road Wins; Kolek Sets Assist Mark For Marquette

MBB Minute – In Wednesday’s league play, Providence and St. John’s won close decisions on the road while Marquette rolled to victory on a record-setting night for guard Tyler Kolek.
 
Providence moved into fifth place after beating Xavier 79-75 at Cintas Center. Devin Carter continued to shine for the Friars (18-9, 9-7), posting 22 points, 11 rebounds, seven assists and four blocked shots. It was Carter’s third straight double-double. Desmond Claude led the Musketeers (13-13, 7-8) with 22 points. Quincy Olivari added 19 points.
 
St. John’s built a 17-point lead in the second half at Georgetown, then held off a Hoya rally and went home with a 90-85 victory. The Red Storm (15-12, 7-9) shot a season-high 57.6 percent from the field. Jordan Dingle led five players in double figures with 22 points. RJ Luis Jr. came off the bench to add 19 points and six rebounds. Jayden Epps registered his fifth 30-point game of the season with 31 points for the Hoyas (8-17, 1-14). He also had seven assists.
 
Marquette’s Kolek set a school record by dishing 18 assists in a 105-71 win over visiting DePaul. The assist total tied for the second highest in a BIG EAST game. Syracuse’s Pearl Washington also had 18 on Feb. 27, 1984 against St. John’s. Kam Jones was a beneficiary of Kolek’s passes, scoring a career-high 34 points. DePaul set a school mark by making 23-of-23 from the foul line. The Golden Eagles (20-6, 11-4) forced 22 turnovers for the Blue Demons (3-23, 0-15).
 
Saturday’s game action begins later in the day when Georgetown travels to DePaul for a 6 p.m. ET tipoff on CBSSN. Villanova and No. 1 Connecticut meet at 8 p.m. on FOX. ESPN’s GameDay show will visit Gampel Pavilion from 10 a.m. to noon. Seton Hall hosts Butler at 8:30 p.m. on FS2.
