MBB Minute – On a three-game Saturday, No. 1 Connecticut bounced back into the winning column, Seton Hall moved into a tie for fourth place and Georgetown ended a long losing streak.
Saturday at Gampel Pavilion began with
UConn hosting CollegeGameday and ended with a 78-54 victory over
Villanova. The Huskies (25-3, 15-2 BIG EAST) were led by Tristen Newton’s fourth triple-double of the season and a game-high 25 points from Cam Spencer. Newton registered 10 points, 16 rebounds and 10 assists. Spencer made 9-of-13 from the floor and 5-of-8 from beyond the arc. Eric Dixon led the Wildcats (15-12, 8-8) with 20 points and eight boards.
In a game between two teams battling for position in the NCAA Tournament field,
Seton Hall defeated visiting
Butler 76-64 and moved into a tie for fourth with Creighton. The Pirates (18-9, 11-5) never trailed, but led only 53-51 before going on a 15-4 run to take control. The Hall got a combined 60 points from Dre Davis (21), Kadary Richmond (20) and Al-Amir Dawes (19). Six Bulldogs (16-12, 7-10) scored between 12 and eight points led by Jalen Thomas’ 12.
Georgetown ended its 11-game losing streak by slipping past
DePaul 77-76 at Wintrust Arena. Jayden Epps made two free throws with 8.1 seconds left for the Hoyas (9-18, 2-14) before the Blue Demons (3-24, 0-16) failed to convert in the final seconds. Epps poured in 33 points for his second straight 30-point game. The DePaul trio of Da’Sean Nelson, Jalen Terry and Elijah Fisher each scored 16 points.
Sunday’s schedule starts at noon ET when
St. John’s hosts No. 15
Creighton at Madison Square Garden on CBS. The Bluejays (20-7, 11-5) won the first meeting 66-65 on Jan. 13. Their five BIG EAST losses have come back a total of 26 points. St. John’s (15-12, 7-9) won 90-85 at Georgetown on Tuesday.
At 5 p.m.,
Xavier (13-13, 7-8) plays at No. 7
Marquette (20-6, 11-4) on FS1. The two teams have yet to meet this season. The last matchup was in the BIG EAST Tournament title game when the Golden Eagles prevailed 65-61.
