MBB Minute – In Tuesday’s BIG EAST action, No. 1 Connecticut extended its winning streak to 11 games with a home win against Butler, while St. John’s got back in the winning column with a solid victory over visiting DePaul.
The duo of Donovan Clingan and Cam Spencer helped
UConn (21-2, 11-1 BIG EAST) defeat
Butler 71-62 at XL Center. Clingan was a force with 18 points, a career-high 14 rebounds, three assists and three blocked shots. Spencer netted a team-high 20 points. He connected on 4-of-8 from 3-point range. The Bulldogs (15-8, 6-6) never led, but stayed in the game led by DJ Davis, who had 21 points, and Jahmyl Telfort, who added 17.
Playing at UBS Arena,
St. John’s made 15 3-pointers – a program record in a BIG EAST game – en route to an 85-57 victory over
DePaul. Jordan Dingle and Daniss Jenkins each made four shots from beyond the arc and each finished with 14 points. The Red Storm (14-9, 6-6) opened the game with a 16-4 spurt and pulled away for the win. K.T. Raimey scored a team-high 11 points for the Blue Demons (3-20, 0-12). Jalen Terry added 10 points.
The Wednesday schedule shows three contests. All are regular-season rematches after close encounters in the first meetings in early January.
Seton Hall (14-8, 7-4) hosts
Georgetown (8-13, 1-9) at 6:30 p.m. ET on FS2. The Pirates beat the Hoyas 74-70 on Jan. 9.
Villanova (12-10, 5-6) visits
Xavier (12-10, 6-5) at 7 p.m. on FS1. The Wildcats edged the Musketeers 66-65 on Jan. 3.
Providence (14-8, 5-6) travels to
Creighton (16-6, 7-4) for an 8:30 p.m. tip on FS2. The Bluejays won the first matchup 69-60 on Jan. 6 over the then-ranked No. 23 Friars.
