MBB Minute – The regular season may not be officially “down the stretch” yet, but Wednesday’s three games had that feel. Providence topped No. 19 Creighton in overtime, Xavier edged Villanova and Seton Hall held off Georgetown. All three winners were playing at home.
The duo of Josh Oduro and Devin Carter was the difference for Providence (15-8, 6-6) in the 91-87 win over
Creighton. Oduro poured in 32 points and pulled down 12 rebounds. Carter forced the extra period with a 40-footer with 28 seconds left in regulation. He finished with 28 points and 11 boards. Baylor Scheierman led the Bluejays (16-7, 7-5) with 27 points and 12 boards. He went over the 2,000-point scoring plateau and became the first player in D-I history to have 2,000 points, 1,000 rebounds, 500 assists and 300 3-pointers.
Villanova held
Xavier and its top-scoring offense to its lowest point total of the season, but the Musketeers (13-10, 7-5) prevailed 56-53. Quincy Olivari made two free throws with 18 seconds left for a 3-point lead and the Musketeer defense shut down the Wildcats on the final possession. Olivari had 14 points. Backcourt partner Desmond Claude added 11. Xavier has won six of its last eight games. The Wildcats (12-11, 5-7) got a team-high 15 points from Brendan Hausen.
Seton Hall did not trail in its 76-70 win against
Georgetown, but had to hold off a late rally. The Pirates led by 11 points with 1:38 remaining before the Hoyas cut the deficit to five points in the final minute. The Pirates (15-8, 8-4) were guided by Dre Davis, who had a career-high 25 points and 10 rebounds. Kadary Richmond had 20 points and eight assists. Supreme Cook and Dontrez Styles each had 20 points for the Hoyas (8-14, 1-10). Cook had 11 boards for this sixth double-double this season.
