Seton Hall’s Davis Named Player of the Week; UConn’s Castle Breaks League Record With 11th Freshman Award

NEW YORK – Seton Hall forward Dre Davis has been named BIG EAST Player of the Week in the final weekly honors of the season. Connecticut guard Stephon Castle is the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week for a record 11th time this season surpassing Syracuse’s Carmelo Anthony who won Freshman honors 10 times in 2002-03.
 
BIG EAST Player of the Week
Dre Davis, Seton Hall, G-F, Sr. – Davis averaged 23.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists in a 2-0 week for the Pirates. In an 86-62 win against DePaul, Davis registered 28 points and seven rebounds. He added 18 points and seven boards in a 66-56 win over Villanova. For the two games, Davis shot 54.5 percent from the floor and was 10-of-10 from the foul line.
    
BIG EAST Freshman of the Week
Stephon Castle, UConn, G, Fr. – Castle sets a BIG EAST record by earning Freshman of the Week honors for the 11th time this season. He averaged 10.0 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists in a 2-0 week. In a 74-60 victory at Providence, Castle posted 14 points, six boards and a career-high four steals without committing a turnover in 29 minutes of playing time.
 
BIG EAST Honor Roll
Trey Alexander, Creighton, G, Jr. – Hit the winning basket with 0.2 seconds left in a win at Villanova (69-67). Finished with 17 points, six rebounds and two steals.
 
Alex Karaban, UConn, F, So. – Averaged 19.5 points and 4.0 rebounds in a 2-0 week. Shot 51.7 percent from the floor and 60.0 percent from 3-point range. Had 23 points in a victory at Marquette (74-67).
 
Kam Jones, Marquette, G, Jr. – Averaged 24.0 points in a 1-1 week while shooting 59.4 percent from the floor. Posted 30 points, five rebounds and a career-high nine assists in a win at Xavier (86-80). 
 
Devin Carter, Providence, G, Jr. – Posted a pair of double-doubles while averaging 24.0 points, 13.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 3.0 steals in a 1-1 week. Had 24 points and 15 boards in a loss to UConn (74-60).  
 
Daniss Jenkins, St. John’s, G, Gr. – In a 2-0 week, averaged 17.5 points and 4.5 assists in wins at DePaul (104-77) and against Georgetown (86-78).
