NEW YORK – Creighton guard Baylor Scheierman has been named BIG EAST Player of the Week and, for a record-tying 10
th time, Connecticut guard Stephon Castle is the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week. Scheierman helped the Bluejays to a 2-0 week while Castle sparked the Huskies to a win that clinched the outright regular-season title.
BIG EAST Player of the Week
Baylor Scheierman, Creighton, G, Sr. – Scheierman averaged 23.0 points, 13.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.5 steals while leading the Bluejays to an 85-64 victory over Seton Hall and an 89-75 defeat of No. 5 Marquette. The senior made 14-of-28 from the field, including 12-of-22 from 3-point range. Scheierman ranks third in the BIG EAST in scoring in all games with an 18.5 average and is second in rebounding at 8.9.
BIG EAST Freshman of the Week
Stephon Castle, UConn, G, Fr. – Castle earns Freshman of the Week honors for the 10
th time this season which ties Syracuse’s Carmelo Anthony for the BIG EAST record. In the Huskies’ only game of the week, Castle tied his career scoring high with 21 points on 9-of-12 shooting from the floor in a 91-61 win over Seton Hall. He also had four rebounds and three assists. Anthony earned his honors in 2002-03.
BIG EAST Honor Roll
Donovan Clingan, Connecticut, C, So. – Registered 19 points, 11 rebounds and five blocked shots in a win over Seton Hall (91-61) that clinched the regular-season title.
Kam Jones, Marquette, G, Jr. – Averaged 20.0 points in a 1-1 week while shooting 55.2 percent from the floor. Scored 23 points in a loss at Creighton (89-75).
Glen Taylor Jr., St. John’s, F, Jr. – In a road win against Butler (82-59), scored a team-high 17 points, which included five 3-pointers, and had three rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Justin Moore, Villanova, G, Gr. – Averaged 14.5 points in a 2-0 week while making 8-of-14 from 3-point range in wins over Georgetown (75-47) and at Providence (71-60).
Desmond Claude, Xavier, G, So. – In a 2-0 week, averaged 23.5 points, 3.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists while shooting 60 percent from the field. He netted a career-high 36 points in a win at Georgetown (98-93).
