UConn, Seton Hall, Butler Win Wednesday; Regular Season Ends Saturday

MBB Minute – Connecticut, Seton Hall and Butler nailed down victories on Wednesday. With only Saturday’s games remaining in the regular season, there is still much to decide for seeding in next week’s BIG EAST Tournament.

No. 2 UConn defeated No. 8 Marquette 74-67 at Fiserv Forum behind Alex Karaban’s game-high 23 points. The Huskies (27-3, 17-2 BIG EAST) tied a league record set previously by three teams with 17 regular season wins. Cam Spencer added 17 points, eight rebounds, six assists and three steals. The Golden Eagles (22-8, 13-6), who are still without injured Tyler Kolek, got 18 points from Kam Jones and 16 from Oso Ighodaro.

Seton Hall clinched a first-round bye with a 66-56 win over Villanova. The trio of Kadary Richmond, Dre Davis and Jaden Bediako combined to score 49 points and grab 25 rebounds for the Pirates (19-11, 12-7). Eric Dixon led the Wildcats (17-13, 10-9) with 14 points and six boards. The Hall held Villanova to 35.2 percent shooting from the field.

Butler jumped to a 20-4 lead against visiting Xavier, then withstood a second half rally to post a 72-66 win. The Bulldogs (18-13, 9-11) completed their league season. Jahmyl Telfort had a game-high 18 points and Posh Alexander added 16. Both players had six rebounds and four assists. Desmond Claude led the Musketeers (15-15, 9-10) with 17 points.

Saturday’s schedule shows four games on FOX and one FS1 telecast. The day starts with Georgetown versus St. John’s at Madison Square Garden at noon ET. St. John’s can make a strong play for the No. 5 seed with a win. No. 10 Creighton plays Villanova at Wells Fargo Center at 2:30 p.m. The Bluejays are the No. 2 seed with a win. At 5 p.m., Marquette visits Xavier. An MU win assures the Golden Eagles of at least a No. 3 seed. At 8 p.m., UConn plays at Providence. If the Friars can upset the Huskies, they could be as high as No. 5. At 8:30 p.m. on FS1, Seton Hall hosts DePaul. The Pirates can finish No. 3 if it’s in a two-way tie with Marquette at 13-7.
