UNCASVILLE, Conn. - Brianna Scott had 11 points to lead four players scoring in double figures as No. 6 seed Georgetown defeated No. 11 seed Xavier 62-40 in the opening round of the Big East women's basketball tournament on Friday at Mohegan Sun Arena.
Kelsey Ransom had 10 points and six assists while Jada Claude and Mya Bembry also had 10 points as Georgetown advanced to the Big East quarterfinals for the third season in a row. The Hoyas will meet No. 3 seed St. John's at 9:30 p.m. on Saturday in the last of the four quarterfinals.
Xavier (1-27), which has gone winless in the Big East in each of the last two seasons, jumped out to the early eight-point lead and led 16-9 at the end of the first quarter.
Georgetown (20-10) regained the lead on a 3-pointer by Alex Cowan with 6:26 left in the first half. The Hoyas led 30-24 at halftime.
Georgetown scored the first 18 points of the third quarter before a free throw by Mackayla Scarlett with 1:18 to play.
The Musketeers missed all eight of their field goals in the quarter as Georgetown took a 50-26 lead into the fourth quarter.
Nila Blackford and Aizhanique Mayo each had 12 points for Xavier.
