UNCASVILLE, Conn. - Emily Archibald had 17 points, seven rebounds and three assists as four starters scored in double figures to lead No. 9 seed Providence to a 75-60 win over No. 8 seed Butler in the first round of the BIG EAST Women's Basketball Tournament presented by JEEP on Friday at Mohegan Sun Arena.
Olivia Olsen had 16 points and 12 rebounds, Grace Efosa had 13 points and Brynn Farrell finished with 11 points for Providence to set up a quarterfinal matchup against top-seeded UConn.
After Butler pulled within four points early in the third quarter, Farrell and Marta Morales Romero hit back-to-back 3-pointers as the Friars (13-19) started to pull away.
Efosa had five consecutive points to cap a 10-0 run as Providence went in front by eight points late in the first quarter.
The lead grew to 13 points after a pair of layups by Olsen.
Butler ended the first half by scoring the nine points to cut the Providence lead to 37-33 at halftime.
Caroline Strande had 20 points and seven rebounds for Butler (14-16).
