Georgetown Edges UConn, 10-9, in 10 Innings

MASON, Ohio – In Thursday’s elimination game of the 2024 BIG EAST Baseball Championship Presented by Jeep at Prasco Park, No. 3 seed Georgetown topped No. 1 seed UConn, 10-9, in extra innings.

The Hoyas will return to Prasco Park Friday at 4 p.m. ET in another elimination game, this time with a spot in Saturday’s title game on the line.

The bats were hot from the beginning, with UConn striking first in the bottom of the first with a double down the line by Korey Morton, sending Paul Tammaro home for the 1-0 lead.

The Hoyas quickly struck back with a pair of solo home runs, with Jake Hyde first hitting one down the right center, before Andrew Bergerson smacked one into left field for a 2-1 advantage.

Continuing to go blow-for-blow, the Huskies regained the lead in the bottom of the third with a score off a wild pitch and a fly out to centerfield, with the Huskies jumping in front 3-2.

In the top of the fourth, Marco Castillo tied the game with a single through left field, as Hyde scored for the second time in the outing and tied the game at 3-3. In the top of the fifth, Joe Hollerbach hit a two-run home run to put Georgetown in front, 5-3.

The lead didn’t last long after freshman Tyler Minick stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded and slammed a ball into deep left center field to give the Huskies a commanding 7-5 advantage.

Grinding back in the top of the sixth, Bergerson doubled through the left side and Josh Rolling reached on a fielding error, as the Hoyas once again evened the score at 7-7.

In the top of the seventh, Hyde tallied his second home run of the game and scored his fourth run to regain the lead for the Hoyas, 8-7.

In the bottom of the eighth, Bryan Padilla’s first hit of the tournament was a massive one, as the junior earned a triple and collected two RBI with Luke Broadhurst and Paul Tammaro both rounding the bases to give the Huskies the 9-8 lead.

Not wanting the season to end, Castillo singled through the left side for Georgetown to send Kavi Caster home for the 9-9 tie and force extra innings. In the top of the 10th, Hollerbach flew out to right field, as Blake Schaff stepped in as a pinch runner and tagged up for the game-winning run.

Overall, the game capped with eight lead changes.
