NEW YORK – Creighton senior forward Morgan Maly was named the BIG EAST Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, announced on Monday. Maly led Creighton to a pair of victories with 25.5 points, 6.5 boards and 1.5 steals versus Marquette and Seton Hall. UConn freshman forward Sarah Strong earned BIG EAST Freshman of the Week for the sixth time as she registered 15.5 points, 8.0 rebounds 3.5 assists and 4.0 steals per game in a 2-0 week against Xavier and Georgetown.
UConn graduate student guard Azzi Fudd, DePaul junior guard Taylor Johnson-Matthews, Georgetown graduate student guard Kelsey Ransom, St. John’s junior forward Kylie Lavelle, and Villanova sophomore guard Maddie Webber were named to this week’s honor roll.
BIG EAST Player of the Week
Morgan Maly, Creighton, Sr., F
* Maly led Creighton to a pair of victories with 25.5 points, 6.5 boards and 1.5 steals versus Marquette and Seton Hall. Over the two games Maly shot 18-of-27 (.667) from the floor and 12-for-17 from three-point range (.706). In the 71-68 win over the Golden Eagles, she was 10-for-11, including 8-for-9 from beyond the arc as she finished with 28 points, six rebounds and two steals. At Seton Hall she delivered 23 points, including Creighton's final eight, going 8-for-16 from the field. After the Pirates closed within two (64-62) with just 2:29 remaining, Maly sealed the 72-64 win with two-straight 3-pointers and a pair of free throws.
BIG EAST Freshman of the Week
Sarah Strong, UConn, Fr., F
Strong averaged 15.5 points, 8.0 rebounds 3.5 assists and 4.0 steals per game in a 2-0 week against Xavier and Georgetown. In the 81-27 win over Xavier, she scored 15 points and added game-highs in rebounds (7) and steals (5) as she helped the Huskies’ defense hold the Musketeers to just 27 points – the fewest allowed this season by UConn. Strong then scored 16 points to go along with nine rebounds, a career-high tying six assists and three steals in the 73-55 win at Georgetown.
BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll
Azzi Fudd, UConn, Gr., G
Fudd led the Huskies to a pair of wins as she averaged 22.0 points on .630 percent shooting from the field versus Xavier and Georgetown. Fudd recorded her first 20-point outing of the season with 23 points in the 81-27 victory over Xavier. She finished the week with a season-high five 3-pointers and 21 points in the 73-55 win at Georgetown.
Taylor Johnson-Matthews, DePaul, Jr., G
Johnson-Matthews led DePaul in scoring in a 2-0 week versus St. John's (67-60) and Providence (62-56). In the comeback win over the Johnnies she scored 19 of her 23 points in the second half. She added 21 points against Providence for her third-straight 20-point contest.
Kelsey Ransom, Georgetown, Gr., G
Ransom recorded a career-high 35 points on 11-for-23 shooting from the field and 13-for-18 from the charity stripe against Villanova. Ransom has scored 25 or more points in seven games this season for the Hoyas.
Kylie Lavelle, St. John’s, Jr., F
Lavelle averaged 18.5 points per game on 61.8 percent shooting from the floor and 60 percent shooting from 3-point range in a 1-1 week. She finished with a season-high 23 points and a career-high four 3-pointers on 66.7 percent shooting from beyond-the-arc in a 60-39 win over Xavier.
Maddie Webber, Villanova, So., G
In a 1-1 week, Webber averaged 17.5 points and 4.5 boards, including 19 points on 8-for-14 from the field in the 77-62 win at Georgetown.
