Butler Outlasts Seton Hall at Home; BIG EAST Honors MLK Day

Standings | Stats

MINUTE – Butler got back in the win column Wednesday night with a hard-fought 82-77 win over Seton Hall at Hinkle Fieldhouse.

Butler (8-10, 1-6 BIG EAST) forward Pierre Brooks II (19 points) and center Andre Screen (16 points) combined for 35 points to lead the Bulldog effort. Butler scored on each of its final four possessions of the contest, bouncing back from a 13-3 Seton Hall run that cut a 12-point deficit to just two with 2:03 on the clock. Chaunce Jenkins led Seton Hall (6-11, 1-5) with a game-high 21 points. Dylan Addae-Wusu was inactive for the Pirates due to an injury.

As part of the conference-wide efforts to support diversity, equity and inclusion, BIG EAST men’s and women’s basketball programs are using their platform to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by wearing shooting shirts donning one of Dr. King’s quotes from his famous “I Have a Dream” speech. The quote “What are you doing for others?” is also the theme of a social media campaign that has been seen by following @BIGEAST on Twitter and Instagram this holiday weekend. The campaign tipped off Tuesday night in Omaha, Neb., with Providence facing Creighton, and will continue throughout the weekend.

BIG EAST action will continue with a pair of games Friday night, beginning with Providence at Villanova at 7 p.m. on FS1. The Friars are led offensively by Jayden Pierre (13.1 ppg) and Bensley Joseph (11.8 ppg). The Wildcats boast the nation’s leading scorer Erix Dixon (24.8 ppg), along with Wooga Poplar (14.4 ppg) to lead the charge.

At 8 p.m. on CBSSN, DePaul travels to Washington D.C. to take on Georgetown. The Blue Demons enter the contest fresh off a narrow overtime defeat at home against No. 7 Marquette, 85-83. DePaul is paced by Jacob Meyer (13.9 ppg) on the offensive end of the floor. After opening conference play a perfect 3-0, the Hoyas will enter Friday’s contest looking to snap a three-game losing streak, coming up short against Marquette, UConn and St. John’s. The Hoyas are led by freshman sensation Thomas Sorber, who leads the team in points (14.2) and the conference in rebounds (8.6) per game.
