DePaul Breaks Through At Georgetown; Villanova Edges Providence

MBB Minute – After knocking on the door more than a few times, DePaul broke into the winning column in league play with a 73-68 win over Georgetown at Capital One Arena. In the other Friday contest, Villanova held on to defeat Providence 75-73.
 
DePaul (10-9, 1-7 BIG EAST) ended a conference record 39-game losing streak in regular season play. The Blue Demons led by as many as 16 points in the second half before holding off a Georgetown rally. CJ Gunn led the winners with 17 points. The Hoyas (12-6, 3-4), who played without injured starters Jayden Epps and Thomas Sorber, got 19-point performances from Malik Mack and Drew Fielder.
 
At Wells Fargo Center, Villanova (12-7, 5-3) came out on top with the help of a Tyler Perkins layup and steal in the final minute. Eric Dixon led four Wildcats in double figures with 23 points. Jhamir Brickus had 18 points and Wooga Poplar produced his fifth double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds. Providence (9-10, 3-5) played without Ryan Mela and Wes Cardet. Bensley Joseph scored a team-high 17 points. Justyn Fernandez started and had 17 points.
 
A three-game Saturday starts with Creighton at No. 14 UConn in Gampel Pavilion at noon ET on FOX. The Huskies (11-6, 4-2) are riding a 27-game home winning streak, though the Bluejays hold a 7-2 edge in the series between the two teams.
 
Following UConn and Creighton on FOX, No. 7 Marquette hosts Xavier. The Golden Eagles (15-2, 6-0) have won six in a row while the Musketeers (11-7, 3-4) are coming off a 69-63 win over Villanova.
 
St. John’s takes the bus to New Jersey to battle Seton Hall at 8 p.m. on FS1. The Red Storm (15-3, 6-1) won the last meeting 91-72 in a BIG EAST Tournament quarterfinal last March. The Pirates (6-11, 1-5) had won the previous four meetings in the series.
