Creighton’s Kalkbrenner, PC’s Mela Earn Weekly MBB Honors

NEW YORK – Creighton center Ryan Kalkbrenner has been named BIG EAST Player of the Week for the second time this season. Providence forward Ryan Mela has been named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week for a second straight week. 
 
BIG EAST Player of the Week
Ryan Kalkbrenner, Creighton, C, Sr.
Kalkbrenner averaged 18.0 points, 10.0 rebounds and 4.0 blocked shots in a 2-0 week. He started with 20 points, 10 boards and six blocks in an 84-64 win against Providence. In a 68-63 victory at No. 14 UConn, which ended the Huskies’ 28-game home winning streak, the center posted 16 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and two steals.
 
BIG EAST Freshman of the Week
Ryan Mela, Providence, F, Fr.
Mela earns Freshman honors for a second straight week. In his only action of the week, he tied for the team lead with 10 points and added seven rebounds and three assists in a loss at Creighton. He did not play in a game at Villanova because of illness.
 
BIG EAST Honor Roll
CJ Gunn, DePaul, F, Jr. – Averaged 19.0 points and 6.0 rebounds in a 1-1 week. Had 21 points in an OT loss versus Marquette (85-83) and 17 points in a win at Georgetown (73-68). 
 
David Joplin, Marquette, F, Sr. – Averaged 24.0 points and 5.0 rebounds in a 1-1 week. Netted a career-high 30 points in an OT win at DePaul (85-83), which included seven 3-pointers. 
 
RJ Luis, St. John’s, G-F, Jr., – Averaged 21.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists in a 2-0 week. Posted 24 points, eight rebounds and four assists in a win at Seton Hall (79-51).
 
Eric Dixon, Villanova, F, Gr. – Averaged 20.5 points and 6.0 rebounds in a 1-1 week. Had 23 points and eight rebounds in a win against Providence (75-73).
 
Ryan Conwell, Xavier, G, Sr. – Averaged 20.0 points and 2.5 assists in a 2-0 week. Scored 34 points in a win over Villanova (69-63), including 13 of the team’s final 14 points.
