UConn Edges Butler In OT; Marquette, Creighton Win On Road

MBB Minute – In Tuesday’s action, UConn prevailed in overtime against Butler while Marquette and Creighton registered double-digit victories away from home.
 
Guard Solomon Ball scored a career-high 23 points, which included a go-ahead 3-pointer late  in the extra period, to lift UConn (14-5, 6-2 BIG EAST) to an 80-78 win. Ball also had six rebounds. Alex Karaban added 19 points, seven rebounds, six assists and three blocked shots. Butler (8-11, 1-7) recovered from a 15-point deficit in the first half and was led by Jahmyl Telfort’s 25 points. Finley Bizjack netted a season-high 17 points.
 
No. 10 Marquette defeated Seton Hall 76-59 on the strength of a defense that made 18 steals and helped force 24 turnovers. The Golden Eagles (16-3, 7-1) also limited the Pirates to 6-of-20 shooting from the field in the first half while putting together a 33-21 lead by halftime. Offensively, Kam Jones made 7-of-11 from the field and finished with 19 points. Isaiah Coleman poured in a career-high 27 points and grabbed nine rebounds for the Pirates (6-13, 1-7).
 
Creighton got out of the gate quickly at DePaul and cruised to a 73-49 victory. The Bluejays (13-6, 6-2) opened the game with a 23-9 run en route to a 31-19 lead at the break. Jamiya Neal scored a team-high 14 points. Ryan Kalkbrenner registered 13 points, eight rebounds and four blocked shots in 25 minutes. Layden Blocker had a team-high 15 points for the Blue Demons (10-10, 1-8).
 
Wednesday’s lone contest has Xavier meeting No. 20 St. John’s in Madison Square Garden at 7 p.m. ET on FS1. The Musketeers (12-7, 4-4) have won three straight and are coming off a 59-57 win at Marquette. The Johnnies (16-3, 7-1) are tied for first place with Marquette. St. John’s beat Xavier in the first meeting 82-72 on Jan. 7.
