MBB Minute – At the end of a four-game Saturday, all four home teams were enjoying victories, though a couple of games had plenty of drama.
At a sold-out Cintas Center,
Xavier held on to defeat No. 19
Connecticut 76-72. A 13-2 run in the second half gave the Musketeers (13-8, 5-5 BIG EAST) the lead and they were able to repel UConn comeback attempts. Dailyn Swain and Zach Freemantle led five XU players in double figures with 15 points each. Dante Maddox Jr. made some critical shots in the second half and finished with 14 points. Solo Ball had his first career double-double with 20 points and a career-high 11 rebounds for the Huskies (14-6, 6-3). Both teams shot 26-of-55 from the field. Xavier has won two of its last three games, all against ranked opponents.
Providence used balanced scoring in its 78-68 win against
Georgetown. Bensley Joseph and Jayden Pierre paced five Friars (10-10, 4-5) in double figures with 14 points each. The win was the eighth straight for PC against the Hoyas (13-7, 4-5). Creighton and
Seton Hall played a fairly even first half before the Bluejays pulled away after halftime and posted a 79-54 victory. Creighton (14-6, 7-2) scored the first nine points of the second half en route to its fifth straight win. Ryan Kalkbrenner registered 23 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots. He became the fifth CU player to reach 1,000 rebounds in his career. The Pirates (6-14, 1-8) had to play without leading scorer Isaiah Coleman, who was out with back spasms.
After a first half of 11 lead changes and nine ties,
Butler had the better play in the second half in an 86-69 victory over
DePaul. Pierre Brooks II netted a career-high 29 points and grabbed 17 rebounds for the Bulldogs (9-11, 2-7). Finley Bizjack matched his season high with 17 points. NJ Benson contributed 20 points and nine rebounds for the Blue Demons (10-11, 1-9), who committed a season-low six turnovers.
