Golden Eagles, Hoyas Win At Home; Two Games Set For Saturday

MBB Minute – Marquette and Georgetown nailed down Friday night victories as each remained unbeaten in BIG EAST play.
 
No. 8 Marquette beat Creighton 79-71 in front of a sellout crowd at Fiserv Forum. The duo of Cam Jones and Stevie Mitchell keyed the Marquette win. Jones scored 15 of his 22 points in the second half while Mitchell had 12 of his 18 points before halftime. The Golden Eagles are 4-0 in BIG EAST play for the first time since 2012-13. Ryan Kalkbrenner became the fourth Bluejay to score 2,000 career points after finishing with a team-high 16. Steve Ashworth added 13 points and 10 assists.
 
Georgetown is 3-0 in the BIG EAST for the first time since 2011-12 after a 69-63 win over visiting Xavier. The Hoyas (12-2, 3-0) never trailed and were led by Malik Mack who netted a game-high 26 points. Micah Peavy added 15 points and 10 rebounds. Georgetown held Xavier to 35.1 shooting from the field. The Musketeers (9-6, 1-3) were buoyed by the return of Zach Freemantle who played 31 minutes and had team highs of 16 points and seven boards.
 
Saturday’s slate includes two games. DePaul visits Villanova at noon ET on FS1. The Blue Demons (9-5, 0-3) and Wildcats (9-5, 2-1) are the BIG EAST’s top two teams in 3-pointers made. Villanova has won six of its last seven games overall.
 
Butler plays St. John’s at Carnesecca Arena at 2 p.m., also on FS1. The Bulldogs (7-7, 0-3) are coming off a 73-65 loss to Villanova while the Johnnies (11-3, 2-1) are trying to bounce back from a 57-56 loss at Creighton.
