Villanova, Seton Hall Win Close Ones; Providence Defeats Butler

MBB Minute – Two of the three games on Wednesday went down to the wire. All three home squads were victorious.
 
Villanova edged No. 9 UConn 68-66 at Finneran Pavilion. The Wildcats (11-5, 4-1 BIG EAST), who have won eight of their last nine games, committed only six turnovers while helping force 13 by the Huskies (12-4, 4-1). VU’s Eric Dixon scored 15 of his game-high 23 points in the second half. Wooga Parker added 18 points. UConn’s Solo Ball scored all of his team-high 18 points in the second half. Villanova is 10-0 when holding its opponent to under 70 points. UConn had its eight-game winning streak come to an end.
 
Seton Hall overcame a 19-point deficit early in the second half to top DePaul 85-80 in overtime. The Pirates (6-9, 1-3) never led in the second half, but forced the extra period when a 3-pointer by Isaiah Coleman tied the game with five seconds left in regulation. Coleman and Dylan Addae Wusu each netted 24 points. The Hall shot 11-of-22 from beyond the arc. The Blue Demons (9-7, 0-5) were led by 21 points from CJ Gunn.
 
Providence controlled play around the basket in its 84-65 victory over Butler. The Friars (8-8, 2-3) won the battle of the boards 43-26 and held a 44-24 edge in points in the paint. Freshman Ryan Mela made his first start and contributed 10 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. Jayden Pierre and Bensley Joseph each added 18 points. PC ended a four-game losing streak. Jahmyl Telfort and Pierre Brooks both had 17 points for Butler (7-9, 0-5).
 
BIG EAST play picks up in a big way on Saturday with five games. FOX has a doubleheader that starts at noon ET when Butler hosts Creighton followed by UConn at Georgetown at 2 p.m. FS1 will telecast Xavier at DePaul at 4 p.m. CBSSN also has a twinbill with Seton Hall at Providence at 5 p.m. followed by Villanova versus St. John’s at 7 p.m. at Madison Square Garden.
