UConn Takes Down Florida at Jimmy V Classic; Providence, DePaul victorious on Tuesday Night


MBB Minute: In a matchup of the two most recent National Champions, No. 5/5 UConn made clutch plays down the stretch to win its fifth straight game, outlasting No. 18/18 Florida, 77-73 in the Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden.  Providence and DePaul both won at home with wins over Brown and Morgan State, respectively.  Villanova's seven-game win streak was snapped at No. 2/1 Michigan.

Tuesday, Dec. 9

UConn 77, Florida 73 - Box Score 
Solo Ball scored a game-high 19 points - including a crucial 3-pointer with 5:01 to play - as the Huskies held off Florida at Madison Square Garden.  UConn shot nearly 60% from the floor in the first half, holding on to a 39-32 lead.  The Gators used a 9-2 run midway through the second half to take a three-point lead (51-48) to play, but the Huskies used an 18-7 push over the next six-plus minutes, taking the lead for good.  Alex Karaban scored 13 points while Tarris Reed Jr. returned to the lineup and added 12 points and five boards.

Providence 86, Brown 79 - Box Score 
Jamier Jones and Jaylin Sellers each had 16 points, leading five Friars in double figures in a win over cross-city foe Brown.  PC led by five at the break (42-37), connecting on 50% from the floor in the opening frame.  Providence would lead by as many as 13 in the second half and through 11 games, are averaging 90.0 points per game - tops in the BIG EAST and 18th nationally.

DePaul 92, Morgan State 49 - Box Score 
It was a dominant defensive effort from the Blue Demons, holding Morgan State to 20.0% shooting from the floor yielding a season-low 49 points.  DePaul jumped out to a 35-6 lead and never looked back, led by Kaleb Banks' season-high 18 points off the bench.  CJ Gunn was 3-for-3 from the outside, scoring 15 points, while Layden Blocker added 14.

Michigan 89, Villanova 61 Box Score 
Devin Askew scored a team-high 18 points and Acaden Lewis added 11 as Villanova's seven-game win streak was snapped, falling at No. 2/1 Michigan.  Askew drilled five 3-pointers, as the Wildcats connected on 10 shots from long-range for the fourth straight game and sixth time in nine outings. Acaden Lewis added 11 points, six boards, three assists, and a steal.
