NEW YORK – Seton Hall graduate student forward Mariana Valenzuela averaged 19.5 points on .636 shooting in a 2-0 week against Creighton and Xavier, earning her the BIG EAST Player of the Week honor. UConn forward Blanca Quiñonez nabbed her third straight weekly honor as freshman of the week.
Creighton senior guard Kennedy Townsend, UConn sophomore forward Sarah Strong, Georgetown sophomore guard Destiny Agubata, Seton Hall junior guard Savannah Catalon, and Villanova sophomore guard Jasmine Bascoe were named to this week’s honor roll.
BIG EAST Player of the Week
Mariana Valenzuela, Seton Hall, Gr., F/C
Valenzuela averaged 19.5 points on .636 shooting, along with 8.0 rebounds and 1.5 blocks in a 2-0 week against Creighton (88-79) and Xavier (75-55). At Creighton, she scored a team-high 23 points on 8-for-12 shooting, including 4-for-5 from three-point range, along with six rebounds, helping Seton Hall secure its first victory in Omaha in 10 years. Later in the week against Xavier, Valenzuela posted her second double-double of the season with 16 points, a game-high 10 rebounds, and three blocks.
BIG EAST Freshman of the Week
Blanca Quiñonez, UConn, Fr., F
Quiñonez scored 12 points on 5-for-7 shooting in the 94-47 win at Butler. She added three rebounds and three steals.
BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll
Kennedy Townsend, Creighton, Sr., G
Townsend averaged 19.0 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.5 steals against Seton Hall and Georgetown. She scored a season-high 30 points on 11-for-25 shooting at Georgetown on Sunday.
Sarah Strong, UConn, So., F
Strong led the Huskies with 15 points, six rebounds, seven assists, and three steals in the team’s 94-47 victory at Butler.
Destiny Agubata, Georgetown, So., G
Agubata scored 16 points with 14 rebounds for her first career double-double in the 76-74 win over Creighton. She went 10-10 from the free throw line, marking the first time a Hoya achieved a perfect 10-10 since Sugar Rodgers in 2012.
Savannah Catalon, Seton Hall, Jr., G
Catalon scored a game-high 24 points in the 75-55 victory versus Xavier. Catalon went 6-for-12 (.500) from the field, 4-for-7 (.571) from deep and 8-for-8 (1.000) from the line. She added three steals to mark the 11th game this season she has recorded three or more swipes.
Jasmine Bascoe, Villanova, So., G
Bascoe scored 21 points on 9-for-14 shooting in the 85-48 win over St. John’s. The sophomore also set a career-high with nine assists, along with five rebounds and two steals.
