Hoyas Fall to NC State in NCAA Quarterfinal

WASHINGTON - The seventh-seeded Georgetown University men's soccer team fell to the 15th-seeded NC State Wolfpack in the NCAA quarterfinal on Saturday afternoon at Shaw Field in Washington, D.C. With the loss, the Hoyas finish the season with a mark of 14-4-4 overall, while the Wolfpack advances with a record of 15-2-4.

Head Coach Brian Wiese
  • "At its core this was a great college soccer game. There were some fantastic goals, lots of yelling and screaming and the boys fought incredibly hard. The situation that they were put in with two unbelievably unlucky penalty kick calls was tough. Guys get balls blasted at them from two yards away and they hit an arm. I'm not sure what you're supposed to do in that setting. Going down 2-0 really early in this game, getting the goal back, going down 3-1, getting the goal back. I just thought it was a fantastic effort from our guys, and I couldn't be prouder of how they handled the scenario today. But you've got to give a lot of credit to NC State, they're a fantastic team. Obviously it's really disappointing, because I think we had a team that was as good as maybe any we've had, in a lot of ways. It was a team that was very capable of getting to the Final Four and maybe winning another national championship, and I'm gutted we don't get another week together."
How it Happened
  • The game was end-to-end action from the jump as both teams had chances, but it was NC State that struck first as the Wolfpack found a solid goal off of a second ball in the fifth minute.
  • Just two minutes later, a GU handball in the box gave the Wolfpack a penalty kick. Senior goalkeeper Tenzing Manske saved the shot, but the rebound went right back to Drew Lovelace who buried it to put the Hoyas down 2-0.
  • Despite the deficit, the Hoyas did not stop pressing and everything changed in the 35th minute as sophomore David Urrutia served in a ball that found the head of junior Matthew Helfrich. He knocked it to freshman Loukas Maroutsis at the top of the box who hit the volley into the back of the net to cut the lead in half.
  • Less than two minutes later, NC State had another golden opportunity as another handball in the box resulted in a second PK which the Wolfpack converted.
  • The scoring wasn't done yet, however, as a free kick by senior Zach Zengue in the 37th minute found the head of sophomore Tate Lampman to make the score 3-2 going into the break.
  • The second half saw the Hoyas have a pair of brilliant chances from sophomore Mitchell Baker including one that went off of the post.
  • Despite the opportunities, GU would not find the equalizer as the Hoyas fell 3-2.
Of Note
  • Both squads managed 14 shots on the day as well as seven apiece on goal.
  • The Hoyas were awarded just one corner to the Wolfpack's two in the contest.
  • Manske took the loss in the net with four saves for the game.
