NEW YORK – St. John’s RJ Luis Jr. has been named BIG EAST Player of the Week and Georgetown forward-center Thomas Sorber has been named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week. Luis Jr. sparked a pair of Red Storm wins against ranked opponents. Sorber earns freshman honors for a seventh time this season and a third straight week.
BIG EAST Player of the Week
RJ Luis, Jr., St. John’s, G-F, Jr.
Luis keyed two St. John’s wins against ranked opponents. He began the week with 17 points, 11 rebounds, four steals and three blocked shots in a 70-64 win over No. 11 Marquette. In a 68-62 victory at No. 19 UConn, Luis made the game-sealing basket in the final seconds and finished with a game-high 21 points and seven rebounds.
BIG EAST Freshman of the Week
Thomas Sorber, Georgetown, F-C, Fr. – Sorber is the Freshman of the Week for the seventh time after averaging 15.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 1.5 blocks in a 1-1 week. He posted his eighth double-double with 13 points and a game-high 11 rebounds in a 60-46 win against Seton Hall. For the week, Sorber shot 58.3 percent from the field.
BIG EAST Honor Roll
Jahmyl Telfort, Butler, F, Gr. – In a 2-0 week, averaged 18.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 4.5 assists. Had 24 points in a win against Providence (82-81).
Ryan Kalkbrenner, Creighton, C, Sr. – Averaged 27.0 points, 9.5 rebounds and 3.0 blocked shots in a 2-0 week. Had 35 points, 12 boards and three steals in a win at Providence (80-69). Shot 65.6 percent from the field for the week.
Micah Peavy, Georgetown, G, Sr. – Averaged 24.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 2.5 steals in a 1-1 week. Had a career-matching 27 points in a victory over Seton Hall (60-46).
Eric Dixon, Villanova, F, Gr.—In a 2-0 week, averaged 19.0 points and 4.0 rebounds. Scored 22 of his 24 points in the second half of a win against Xavier (80-68).
Dante Maddox, Jr., Xavier, G, Gr. – Posted 24 points, five boards and three assists in a loss at Villanova (80-68). Averaged 15.0 points and made 75 percent from the field in a 1-1 week.
