MBB Minute – On a four-game Saturday, the drama was centered at Prudential Center where
Seton Hall forced overtime by scoring seven points in the final 36 seconds of regulation against
UConn and won the game 69-68 on a steal and a tip-in in the final seconds.
The Hall’s Scotty Middleton tipped in his own miss to win the game and end his team’s nine-game losing streak. Isaiah Coleman led the Pirates (7-18, 2-12 BIG EAST) with a game-high 23 points. The Huskies (17-8, 9-5) were led by Alex Karaban’s 20 points.
Butler owns a three-game winning streak after a 97-86 victory over
Georgetown at Hinkle Field House. The Bulldogs (12-13, 5-9) used a 19-4 run in the first half to take control. Pierre Brooks made 10-of-13 from the floor and 8-of-8 from the foul line to finish with a career-high 30 points. The Hoyas put five players in double figures led by Micah Peavy’s 21 points. He also dished 10 assists. Thomas Sorber was injured in the first half and did not return.
Xavier moved into a tie for fifth place with Villanova after an 85-68 win over visiting
DePaul. The Musketeers (16-10, 8-7) got off to a 10-0 start and led 45-31 by halftime. All five starters reached double figures led by Zach Freemantle’s 19 points. He also pulled down a game-high nine rebounds. CJ Gunn led the Blue Demons (11-15, 2-13) with 16 points.
Providence never trailed in its 75-62 victory over
Villanova at the AMP. The Friars (12-14, 6-9) hit their first six 3-pointers en route to a 36-24 halftime lead while the Wildcats (15-11, 8-7) made only one trey in the first 28:51. Jayden Pierre led four PC players in double figures with 19 points. Wooga Poplar and Jordan Longino each had 18 points for VU.
Sunday’s lone contest is a battle between No. 9 and first-place
St. John’s (21-4-12-2) and second-place and No. 24
Creighton (18-7, 11-3) at Madison Square Garden at 3 p.m. ET on FS1. The Bluejays won the first meeting 57-56 on Dec. 31.
