UNCASVILLE, Conn. - Paige Bueckers had 24 points and eight rebounds as top-seeded UConn defeated No. 2 seed Creighton 70-50 in the championship game of the Big East Women's Basketball Tournament presented by JEEP, on Monday at Mohegan Sun Arena.
Sarah Strong had 13 points, 11 rebounds, four assists, six steals and three blocked shots and Azzi Fudd added 13 points for UConn (31-3).
Lauren Jensen had 13 points, seven rebounds and three assists for Creighton (26-6) while Morgan Maly finished with 12 points.
Creighton came into the game leading the Big East with an average of 9.2 3-pointers per game. The Bluejays finished 6 of 23 from 3-point range in their first Big East title game since 2016. Bueckers and Fudd each had three 3-pointers and 11 points in the first half. The Huskies jumped out to the 11-0 lead. After Creighton pulled within four points, Bueckers had all of her team's points in an 11-2 run. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Fudd and Bueckers gave the Huskies their first 20-point lead of the first half.
"You work entirely for this moment to shine in March, Bueckers said after being named the Most Outstanding Player in the Big East Tournament for the third time. "It has meant everything. It has been a dream since I was kid [to play at UConn]. It has been a blessing.
Bueckers averaged 22.3 points, 4.7 rebounds and 4 assists in the three games to earn tournament Most Outstanding Player honors. She was joined on the all-tournament team by UConn’s Strong and Fudd, Creighton's Morgan Maly and Jensen, and Georgetown's Kelsey Ransom.
UConn earns the BIG EAST’s automatic bid into the 2025 NCAA Tournament. The 2025 NCAA DI Women's Basketball March Madness bracket will be revealed during the Selection Show at 8 p.m. ET on Sunday, March 16 on ESPN.
