MBB Minute – St. John’s won the BIG EAST regular-season title and earned the No. 1 seed in next week’s BIG EAST Tournament with a 71-61 victory over Seton Hall before a sellout crowd at Madison Square Garden. It is the Johnnies’ second outright crown. They also won in 1984-85, the season they advanced to the Final Four.

St. John’s (26-4, 17-2 BIG EAST) was led by RJ Luis, Jr. and Zuby Ejiofor. Luis Jr. had a game-high 21 points. Ejiofor posted 17 points and 10 rebounds. Dylan Addae-Wusu led a gritty effort by
Seton Hall (7-22, 2-16) with 18 points, seven assists and four steals.
No. 21
Marquette and Creighton are tied for second place with 13-5 league marks. The Golden Eagles (22-7, 13-5) won 76-61 at
Georgetown. Kam Jones scored 13 points and dished a career-high 13 assists. His streak of 45 straight games scoring in double figures leads the nation. Micah Peavy led the Hoyas (16-13, 7-11) with 15 points and six rebounds.
Creighton dropped an 83-61 decision at
Xavier. The Bluejays (20-9, 13-5) fell behind early against the surging Musketeers (19-10, 11-7). Ryan Kalkbrenner was the only CU player in double figures. He scored 23 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Xavier got 20-point efforts from Zach Freemantle (23 pts.) and Ryan Conwell. XU led 42-27 at halftime.
UConn remained in fourth place, a half-game up on Xavier with a 75-63 win at
Providence. Tarris Reed Jr. came off the bench in the first minute and finished with career highs in points (24), rebounds (18) and blocked shots (6). The Huskies (20-9, 12-6) shot 53.8 percent from the field. Jayden Pierre was one of 10 Friars (12-17, 6-12) who scored. He had 10 points.
Villanova is also surging. The Wildcats (18-12, 11-8) have won seven of their last eight after an 80-70 win over
Butler. Eric Dixon, the nation’s leading scorer, poured in 34 points on 14-of-21 shooting for VU. Jordan Longino added 14 points. The Bulldogs (13-16, 6-12) were paced by 16-point performances from Jahmyl Telfort and Finley Bizjack.
The BIG EAST schedule is dark until Tuesday when Creighton plays at Seton Hall and Villanova visits Georgetown.
