UConn Wins 2025 #BIGEASTsb Championship in Record-Breaking Fashion

VILLANOVA, PA –
With a record-breaking 18-4 (5) victory over No. 4 Creighton, second-seeded UConn won the 2025 BIG EAST Softball Championship Presented by JEEP. The win marked the Huskies’, who are celebrating their 50th season, first BIG EAST tournament title since 2001.

Eighteen runs is the most scored by a single team in BIG EAST Championship history.

UConn earns the BIG EAST’s automatic bid to the 2025 NCAA Softball Tournament. They will learn their opponent and schedule during the NCAA Selection Show on May 11, 2025 at 7 p.m. ET. Fans can watch the show on ESPN2.

Graduate pitcher Payton Kinney (UConn) was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. She boasted a 3-0 record while owning a 2.19 ERA over 16 innings of work.

Kinney was joined on the All-Tournament squad by teammates Grace Jenkins (Jr., C), Lexi Hastings (Sr., OF), and Cat Petteys (Fr., SS).

Creighton was represented by pitcher Kenzie Schopfer and outfielder Sydra Seville.

Villanova short stop Ava Franz, Providence pitcher Alyssa Twomey, and Butler utility player Ella White rounded out the All-Tournament team.

The Huskies exploded for 12 runs in the second inning. After loading the bases, Kaitlyn Breslin walked in the first run of the night. Lexi Hastings followed with a two-RBI double to score Kaitlyn Kibling and Hailey Coupal. Kaiea Higa then tacked on another two runs with a single up the middle to send Lexi Hastings and Savannah Ring home.

In the next at bat, Rosie Garcia reached on a fielder’s choice as Higa scored on an error and Grace Jenkins found home. Garcia tacked on another run behind a wild pitch.

Coupal contributed two RBI with a single to second as Breslin and Cat Petteys registered runs. Coupal followed with an unearned run as Ring grounded out to the short stop. Kibling tacked on the last run of the inning behind a single from Hastings.

The Huskies hammered in another six runs in the third inning. Ring doubled to right center to score Kibling and Coupal before finding home herself off the bat of Jenkins. Higa then notched an RBI single to score Jenkins.

Creighton produced three runs in the fourth innings. Two runs were scored off the bat of Kaelan Schultz who homered for the 14th time this season. Erika Perez added an unearned run. In the fifth inning, Pierson added another unearned run.

UConn owned a 18-4 advantage in hits. Kinney went the distance in the circle, striking out two.
