NEW YORK – UConn sophomore forward Sarah Strong collected her seventh BIG EAST Player of the Week honor. Seton Hall freshman guard Zahara Bishop earned her third BIG EAST Freshman of the Week.
DePaul junior guard Kate Novik, Georgetown graduate student forward Brianna Scott, St. John’s redshirt junior forward Daniela Abies, Seton Hall senior guard Jordan Codio, and Villanova senior forward Denae Carter were named to this week’s honor roll.
BIG EAST Player of the Week
Sarah Strong, UConn, So., F
Strong averaged 17.0 points, 7.5 rebounds, 3.0 steals while shooting 75% from the field and 60% from three in another 2-0 week for the Huskies. The sophomore had a double-double with 21 points, 12 rebounds, four assists, three blocks and five steals in the 83-69 road win at Villanova. She rounded out the week with 13 points in 13 minutes on 6-for-7 shooting in the 81-38 victory versus Providence.
BIG EAST Freshman of the Week
Zahara Bishop, Seton Hall, Fr., G
Bishop continued her strong freshman season in a pair of Seton Hall contests last week. The guard nearly had a double-double at Xavier on Wednesday, scoring 10 points to go with nine rebounds and two assists. On Sunday against St. John’s, Bishop had five points, four rebounds and made all three of her free-throw attempts.
BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll
Kate Novik, DePaul, Jr., G
In a 1-1 week against Providence and Xavier, the junior averaged 19.5 points per game, 7.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists, and 2.5 steals. She recorded a season-high 23 points to go with five rebounds, five assists on 57-percent shooting from the field against the Friars. In the 76-67 win over Xavier, she had a team-high 16 points, nine rebounds, five assists, and four steals.
Brianna Scott, Georgetown, Gr., F
Scott averaged 18.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 2.0 blocks, and was a perfect 11-for-11 from the line in a 1-1 week for Georgetown.
In the 62-60 win at St. John’s, Scott tied a career-high 22 points, to go with a team-high five rebounds, two steals and two blocks. Against Butler, Scott recorded her 11th double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds, going 7-for-7 from the free-throw line.
Daniela Abies, St. John’s, R-Jr., F
Abies shot 66.7% from the field and 70% from the free-throw line while averaging 14.0 rebounds per game. The redshirt junior recorded seven points, two assists and a block while leading the team with nine rebounds and tying her career-high with four steals against Georgetown. Daniela recorded her third double-double of the season, finishing with a team-leading 12 points and a season-best 19 rebounds, three shy of her career-high, in the 59-56 road victory at Seton Hall. The forward posted the highest rebounding total by a Red Storm player since Kayla Charles collected 20 boards in 2018.
Jordan Codio, Seton Hall, Sr., G/F
Codio led Seton Hall in scoring in both games last week, averaging a team-best 18.0 points, to go with 5.0 rebounds per contest. In Wednesday’s 64-55 victory at Xavier, she tied her career-high with 22 points on an efficient 10-for-12 shooting from the floor. She also grabbed six rebounds and drained her only three-point attempt. On Sunday against St. John’s, she had a game-high 14 points with four rebounds.
Denae Carter, Villanova, Sr., F
Carter averaged 17.5 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.0 steals in a 1-1 week, including a career-high 21 points versus UConn. She finished the week with 14 points, five rebounds, three steals, and two assists in the 64-38 win over Marquette.
