St. John’s Falls to Columbia in WBIT First Round

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The St. John's women's basketball team fell to Columbia, 74-26, on Thursday night in the WBIT First Round.

The Red Storm closed out the 2025-26 campaign with a tough loss to Columbia in its second WBIT appearance.

The Red Storm were led by Daniela Abies with 10 points and eight rebounds.

All-Ivy League First Team and Player of the Year, Riley Weiss, led the Lions with 22 points, four boards and three assists.

The Lions came out strong, opening the game with a 6-0 run before Sa'Mya Wyatt got her team on the board with a short jumper in the paint within the first four minutes. Columbia kept up the pressure, adding seven straight points to extend the lead to 13-2 before the first media timeout. By the end of the opening quarter, the Lions had built a 20-4 advantage, limiting the Red Storm's offense to just four points.

Both teams traded early threes in the second quarter before Columbia extended its lead to 27-7. Kylie Lavelle's three-point play and two jumpers from Wyatt cut it to 33-14, but late baskets from Lavelle and Abies weren't enough, as the Red Storm trailed 42-18 at halftime.

Columbia stayed hot after the break, with Weiss hitting back-to-back threes to spark another run. Despite scores from Janeya Grant and Abies, the Lions pushed their lead to 62-22, taking a 40-point advantage into the final quarter.

Despite a low-scoring final frame, Columbia ran away with the 74-26 victory over the Red Storm to advance to the Second Round of the WBIT.

St. John's concludes the 2025-26 season with a 22-12 overall record and an 11-9 mark in conference play.
