UNCASVILLE, Conn. – As No. 9 seed Butler and No. 8 seed Georgetown tipped off the 2026 BIG EAST Women’s Basketball Tournament Presented by Jeep Friday Morning at Mohegan Sun Arena, it was a tale of two halves as Georgetown came back to secure a 62-58 win.
Despite not having the most efficient day on the floor, the Hoyas dominated the offensive glass 18-5, with a 19-3 advantage in second-chance points. Georgetown also held the upper hand in points in the paint with a 42-18 difference.
The Hoyas were led on the offensive end with a game-high 19 points by graduate guard Laila Jewett, along with double figures from graduate forward Brianna Scott (10 points) and graduate forward Chetanna Nweke (10 points). Butler freshman guard Anna Wypach led the Bulldogs with 18 points, while redshirt sophomore forward Mallory Miller finished with 15 points for the Bulldogs.
Butler set the tone early with success on the perimeter, knocking down 3-of-5 shots from deep in the opening quarter, while the defense forced the Hoyas to shoot just 1-of-8 from beyond the arc. Overall, the Bulldogs took a 17-11 lead through the opening 10 minutes, led by Miller’s six points.
Georgetown got back on track early in the second quarter with a 7-2 run, including a 3-pointer by Jewett. Butler’s Wypach followed up with a 5-0 run of her own, knocking down a 3-pointer with 5:50 remaining in the half, before knocking down the only two free throws from either team in the opening 20 minutes.
At the break, Butler held a 30-23 advantage, shooting 11-of-26 (.423) from the field and 6-of-12 (.500) from deep, while the Hoyas were limited to shooting 10-of-36 (.278) from inside the arc and 3-of-15 (.200) from 3-point range.
Out of the break, it was all Georgetown in the third quarter, as the Hoyas took their first lead of the game at the under-five media timeout, while outscoring Butler 21-12 in the frame. Georgetown out-rebounded Butler on the offensive end 7-0, converting on eight second-chance points. Overall, Butler was limited to shooting just 2-of-6 from the field. The Bulldogs took advantage of Georgetown’s foul trouble, making 8-of-10 shots from the charity stripe.
The Hoyas withstood a late run of 3-pointers from the Bulldogs, as Georgetown connected on 8-of-9 free throws in the fourth quarter to advance to the quarterfinals.
Georgetown will take on No. 1 seed UConn at Noon at Mohegan Sun Arena on Saturday. The game will air on Peacock and NBCSN.
