Postseason Update
DePaul and No. 7/2 Georgetown have officially punched their postseason tickets as the Blue Demons topped Providence to increase their point total to 18, while the Hoyas defeated Seton Hall to bump their season points to 17. Three teams have also been eliminated from playoff contention as Xavier, Seton Hall and Villanova cannot rise higher than eighth place in the final standings. Still plenty is left to be decided as five teams are eligible for the remaining four spots, while the two first-round byes are also up for grabs. Marquette is just three points behind DePaul and the two squads still have yet to play, while the Golden Eagles find themselves just two points behind Georgetown, so a first-round bye is not out of the picture for MU. Butler is currently the last team in with 10 points, holding a narrow margin over the first team out in Creighton with nine points.
Pivotal Matchups
Sunday’s showdowns are crucial to postseason qualification and seeding. In what could be used to determine the regular-season champion, DePaul visits No. 7/2 Georgetown on Sunday at 1 p.m. The two teams are the current frontrunners for the two first-round byes. Creighton is currently on the outside looking in but a win over Xavier could potentially launch the Bluejays as high as fifth, depending on the Butler-Marquette and St. John’s-Villanova outcomes. Just one point separates the last team in (Butler, 10) and first team out (Creighton, nine), with as many as six points still up for grabs for all teams. All games Sunday kick off at 1 p.m. (ET) with the exception of Butler-Marquette which is slated for a 2 p.m. (ET) start. Golden Eagles head coach Markus Roeders eyes career win No. 300 on Sunday, capturing No. 299 Thursday at Villanova. The BIG EAST Digital Network will live stream all remaining regular-season matches, along with the BIG EAST Championship First Round and Semifinals, while FS1 will carry the title game.
Balanced Attack
Thursday night saw 15 goals scored across five BIG EAST contests, with 14 different players accounting for the strikes (and one own goal). Georgetown’s Crystal Thomas moved into a tie for the conference lead with Creighton’s Lauren Sullivan with her sixth goal of the league season, while DePaul’s Kelli Hubly jumped into the No. 1 slot for assists with her fifth dish of the conference schedule.
