WBB Notes - 2.6 Update
Rivalry Renewed on FS1
Arguably the most noteworthy rivalry in BIG EAST play as of late is headlining FS1 on Sunday as No. 20/21 DePaul (9-4, 6-2 BIG EAST) travels to Marquette (12-3, 9-2). Tipoff is set for noon ET. A rematch of the last four BIG EAST Tournament title games, the Blue Demons had the final word in last season’s series, knocking off Marquette 88-74 for its third straight tourney crown. DePaul has had the edge in the postseason meetings, winning three straight, including 2019’s dramatic 74-73 finale. The Golden Eagles, however, have had a recent run of success in the regular season, winning six of the last eight meetings with their rivals from 90 miles south of Milwaukee. The teams split the regular-season series in 2019-20, with DePaul winning 89-71 on its home court before the Golden Eagles prevailed 90-83 on their home court. Both teams are coming off setbacks to No. 3/5 UConn.
DePaul-Marquette Stats Of Note
Offense vs. Defense: DePaul boasts the No. 2 scoring offense (83.8) in the BIG EAST while Marquette shows the No. 2 scoring defense (62.7).
Sharing The Rock: They’re both among the national leaders in assists per game, with MU ranking sixth among Division I teams with 20.4 dishes per game, while DePaul lists 23
rd nationally with 17.0 dimes per contest.
First To 90: Over the last 19 meetings, the winning team scored 90 or more on 14 occasions, while they’ve averaged a combined 171 points per showdown during that stretch. The lowest scoring output since the 2013-14 season was the Blue Demons’ 2019 BIG EAST Tournament title win when they scored a 74-73 victory. It marked the only game in the series since 2013-14 that neither team reached the 80-point mark.
Who To Watch: Though Lexi Held (26.0) and Selena Lott (21.3) shined in the three-game series a season ago, two faces to watch on Sunday, in addition to Held and Lott, are Deja Church and Camryn Taylor. Church leads DePaul with 5.6 rebounds per game and the Golden Eagles are a big and physical rebounding bunch. Leading that group is Taylor, who collects 6.9 boards per game. Church averaged 13.0 points and 6.0 boards against Marquette last year, while Taylor posted 6.7 points and 3.6 boards off the bench against DePaul.
