#BIGEASTwbb Minute: DePaul Wins Rivalry Game, Top-3 Battle Next As UConn Hosts South Carolina

WBB Notes - 2.8.21
It’s No. 2 vs. No. 3 On FS1

FS1 has must-see TV on Monday night as No. 3/5 UConn hosts No. 2/1 South Carolina at 7 p.m. ET.  The Huskies are 13-1 on the year, including an 11-0 mark in BIG EAST play, while the Gamecocks are 15-1 and 10-0 in SEC action. UConn is 8-1 all-time against South Carolina, with the Gamecocks ending the Huskies’ perfect record in the series last season with a 70-52 victory at Colonial Life Arena. UConn freshman Paige Bueckers will look to continue her dominating play as the rookie has averaged 27.8 points per game over her last four contests, including back-to-back 30-point performances last week. For the season, Bueckers is averaging 20.4 points and 5.7 assists per contest. The Huskies’ scoring offense ranks fourth nationally at 87.1 points per game, while South Carolina lists 11th at 82.4. The Gamecocks are led Aliyah Boston who is averaging 13.7 points and 11.3 rebounds per game. Lisa Byington and Monica McNutt will have the call for FS1.

Sunday In #BIGEASTwbb: 20/21 DePaul 87, Marquette 82
The rivalry game lived up to the hype as it was yet another tight, high-scoring battle between DePaul and Marquette. Five ties and six lead changes dotted this contest, with the 20th-ranked Blue Demons coming away with their first win over Marquette at the Al McGuire Center since Feb. 27, 2016. Deja Church filled the stat sheet to lead DePaul to the win, scoring a career-high 24 points while adding six rebounds, five steals and three assists. Lauren Van Kleunen and Jordan King tied for the Marquette lead with 21 points apiece. Marquette erased a 17-point, third-quarter deficit, going on a 20-2 run to tie the game in the fourth. The game was knotted, 78-78, with 3:31 to go, but MU went 1-6 from the field the rest of the way while DePaul was 2-for-3 and made clutch free-throws to keep the Golden Eagles at bay. Sonya Morris added 23 points for DePaul, including nine fourth-quarter points.

Up Next
In addition to the UConn-South Carolina tilt, Monday also features a BIG EAST contest as Seton Hall visits Georgetown at 4 p.m. ET. That game will stream live on the BIG EAST Digital Network presented by SoFi, available on FloSports (WATCH). The Hoyas took Marquette to the brink on Wednesday before the Golden Eagles escaped Washington, D.C., with a 55-48 win, while the Pirates are playing their first game since an 85-59 win over Xavier on Jan. 23. The Hall has the BIG EAST’s top active winning streak at five games, thanks in large part to the contributions of Andra Espinoza-Hunter who leads the Pirates with 21.6 points per game.
