COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Five former standouts for the UConn women's basketball team were selected to the 2020 U.S. Olympic Women's Basketball Team, which was announced Monday morning. Sue Bird, Tina Charles, Napheesa Collier, Breanna Stewart and Diana Taurasi will represent USA Basketball in Tokyo.
Four-time Olympians Bird and Taurasi look to be the seventh and eighth basketball athletes all-time to compete in five Olympics (Teresa Edwards, USA, 1984-2000, Juan Carlos Navarro, Spain, 2000-16; Adriana Moisés Pinto, Brazil, 2000-16; Oscar Schmidt, Brazil, 1980-86; Andrew Gaze, Australia, 1984-2000; Teófilo Cruz, Puerto Rico, 1960-76).
Charles will compete in her third Olympics while Stewart will appear in her second. Collier makes her first Olympics roster this year.
The XXXII Olympic Games women's basketball competition will be held July 26-Aug. 8 at the Saitama Super Arena, Saitama, Japan.
All 12 athletes took part in the 2019-20 USA Basketball National Team expanded training program which saw the USA post a 17-1 record, including 5-1 against NCAA Division I teams in exhibition games and 12-0 versus international teams in FIBA-sanctioned competitions.
The USA, which owns an all-time record of 66-3 in Olympic play, enters the Tokyo Olympics riding a 49-game winning streak in Olympic competition, which began with the 1992 bronze medal game and includes a record six-straight gold medals.
In 2016, the most recent Olympic Games, the U.S. took the gold medal, while Spain captured silver and Serbia won bronze.
