Butler Men, Georgetown Women Repeat As Cross Country Champs

CARMEL, IND. – The Butler men and Georgetown women posted their second straight conference titles at The BIG EAST Cross Country Championships Presented by JEEP held at the Northview Church Course in Carmel, Ind.  The Georgetown men were the runners-up and the Butler women finished second.

Butler’s Simon Bedard was the men’s individual winner with a time of 23:58.6 in muddy conditions over the 8K distance.  He finished third last spring when the last Championship was held.  Georgetown’s Maggie Donahue used a ferocious kick in the final 50 meters to win the women’s 6K in a time of 20:47.8.  She was the 2020 runner-up.

Butler’s Bedard held off Villanova’s Haftu Strintzos, who was only four-tenths of a second behind with a time of 23:59.0.  Strintzos was the defending individual champion.  Butler’s Barry Keane, last spring’s runner-up, finished third at 24:03.2. 

In a dramatic finish on the women’s side, Donahue edged Villanova’s Lydia Olivere, the 2019 BIG EAST champion.  Olivere’s time was 20:49.3.  Butler’s Angelina Ellis finished third at 20:53.8.  UConn’s Mia Nahom was fourth and Villanova’s Sadie Sigfstead was fifth, though both had an official time of 21:00.0.

The winning formula for the Butler men was placing runners first, third, fifth and ninth.  The Bulldogs had 35 points, while Georgetown finished with 49 points.  Butler had Clark Otte place fifth (24:22.7) and Jack McMahon ninth (24:35.2).  The other top-five finisher was Providence’s Marcelo Rocha, who was fourth (24:22.7), the same time as Otte.
The Georgetown women took four of the top 13 finishes, including first, sixth, 10th and 13th.  Sami Corman, the defending champion, was sixth with a time of 21:02.6.  Kiera Bothwell finished 10th (21:08.8).

The Villanova men took third place with 63 points and all five runners finishing in the top 20.  In the women’s race, UConn was a close third with 70 points.
