Georgetown Women Take Third Straight X-C Crown; Villanova Men Win

Providence’s Jane Buckley, Butler’s Barry Keane Grab Individual Honors

ATTLEBORO, Mass. (October 29, 2022) – The Georgetown women and the Villanova men were the team winners at the BIG EAST Cross Country Championships Presented by JEEP held at the Highland Park Course in Attleboro, Mass., in sunny conditions with temperatures in the high 50s.
 
Providence freshman Jane Buckley captured individual women’s honors with a time of 20:06 in the 6K race. She is only the second freshman to win the women’s race. The first was Michele Hallett of Boston College who won the first BIG EAST Women’s Cross Country title in 1982. Buckley finished two seconds ahead of last year’s champion, Georgetown’s Maggie Donahue, who recorded a time of 20:08.
 
Georgetown took the women’s team title with five runners finishing in the top 10. Grace Jensen finished third with a time of 20:17. Katy-Ann McDonald was fifth at 20:18. Sami Corman (20:38) and Chloe Gonzalez (20:43) were ninth and 10th, respectively.
 
The Providence women finished second to Georgetown. The Friars were helped by Shannon Flockhart’s fourth-place finish at 20:18. Lily Tuck was sixth at 20:27. Georgetown finished with 29 points. Providence had 40 points.
 
In the men’s 8K race, Butler’s Barry Keane outkicked Villanova’s Haftu Strintzos to win the individual crown. Keane’s time was 23:15. Strintzos finished in 23:21. Keane took third place in last year’s Championship. Strintzos was the runner-up for a second straight year.  
 
Strintzos led five Villanova finishers in the top 10. Liam Murphy was third with a time of 23:28 followed by Charlie Donovan (23:34) in fifth, Jack Jennings (23:37) in seventh and Josh Phillips (23:34) in 10th. Villanova’s team total was 27 points. Providence was the men’s runner-up with 55 points. The Friars were led by sixth-place Marcelo Rocha (23:36) and eighth-place D.J. Principe (23:37). It was Rocha’s third career top-10 finish.
