Creighton’s Duncan McGuire Garners MAC Hermann Trophy

ST. LOUIS – Creighton University men's soccer junior Duncan McGuire won the Missouri Athletic Club's (MAC) Hermann Trophy at the annual awards reception on Friday evening in St. Louis. The trophy was awarded to the top male and female collegiate soccer players in the nation, which was determined by a vote of Division I coaches who are members of the United Soccer Coaches.

The MAC Hermann Trophy, presented by World Wide Technology, is the most coveted individual honor in NCAA Division I soccer and has been awarded annually since 1967. This year, the 10-pound crystal soccer ball was awarded to McGuire on the men’s side and Michelle Cooper from Duke University on the women’s side.

McGuire is the sixth BIG EAST men’s soccer student-athlete to receive the award and it marks the second consecutive season a BIG EAST student-athlete has garnered the illustrious award. Georgetown’s Dante Polvara was previously named the 2021 MAC Hermann Trophy winner. McGuire is also the second winner of the MAC Hermann Trophy in Creighton program history, as current head coach Johnny Torres won both the MAC and Hermann Awards in 1997. The two awards merged in 2002.

As a junior, McGuire led the nation in goals (23) and points (50) in NCAA Division I men's soccer. McGuire set the Creighton single-season record in goals (23) this season, while picking up BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year accolades. He helped propel the Bluejays forward in the College Cup with four goals and one assist across four tournament games. His 23rd goal of the season tally of 2022 knotted Creighton's College Cup match at 1-1 with eventual NCAA Champion, Syracuse, on Friday, December 9.

In the 2022 MLS Super Draft, McGuire was selected sixth overall to Orlando City. Runners-up for the men's award were Syracuse senior forward Levonte Johnson (Brampton, Ontario) and Duke junior midfielder Peter Stroud (Chester, N.J.).

Along with McGuire and Polvara, UConn’s Joseph Lapira (2006) and Chris Ghandi (2000), and St. John’s Chris Winghert (2003) are the five recipients of the MAC Hermann Trophy in BIG EAST men’s soccer history.
