BIG EAST Lands Three Top 10 Overall Seeds In Big Dance

NEW YORK – Connecticut, the NCAA Tournament reigning champion, is the No. 1 seed in the 2024 NCAA Tournament as announced Sunday night. The Huskies are the top seed in the East Regional. Marquette is the No. 2 seed in the South Region and Creighton is the No. 3 seed in the Midwest Region.

In the NCAA’s overall tournament seeding, UConn is No. 1, Marquette is No. 7 and Creighton is No. 10.

UConn will play No. 16 seed Stetson in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Friday. Overall, the Huskies, who won the BIG EAST Tournament crown on Saturday, against Marquette, have earned a No. 1 seed six times in program history. UConn won its 11th BIG EAST regular-season title and eighth BIG EAST Tournament crown at Madison Square Garden last week.

Marquette, which tied Creighton for second place in the regular season, will meet 15th-seeded Western Kentucky in Indianapolis on Friday at 2 p.m. on TBS. The Golden Eagles (25-9) have played without guard Tyler Kolek for the past six games due to an oblique injury. He is expected to return this week. If the Golden Eagles beat WKU, they will play the winner of the Florida-Boise State/Colorado game.

Creighton will play No. 14 seed Akron Thursday at 1:30 p.m. on TNT. The Bluejays (23-9) reached the Elite Eight in last year’s NCAAs and are making their ninth NCAA appearance in the last 13 years and 25th overall. The Bluejays have played in the postseason in 25 of the last 27 seasons. If the Bluejays win, they will play the winner of South Carolina/Oregon.

Five BIG EAST teams have accepted invitations to the National Invitation Tournament. Seton Hall and Villanova were issued No. 1 seeds in the 32-team event that includes four brackets of eight teams.

The Musketeers won the 2022 NIT. Butler (18-14) hosts Minnesota (18-14) at 9 p.m. on ESPNU. Bulldog coach Thad Matta won the 2008 NIT while coaching Ohio State.
